If you have already published in an OA Journal - congratulations! You are in compliance. To see if a journal is open access, search at SHERPA/RoMEO or contact our office (iusw@indiana.edu).

Options

There are several options for depositing in an Open Access repository.

  • Disciplinary repositories

Many fields have subject or disciplinary repositories, such as the long-established arXiv or the recently created SocArXiv or Humanities Commons. The Open Access Directory maintains an active list of subject-specific repositories.

  • Open repositories

These include commercial options such as figshare, which is owned by Digital Science, and open source solutions such as Zenodo, a repository developed by CERN for the OpenAIRE project.

  • IUScholarWorks (an institutional repository)

Like an open repository, IUScholarWorks is not limited by field or discipline, but it exists to serve the Indiana University research community. The IUScholarWorks repository follows best practices to ensure the availability, longevity, and purpose of deposited materials. The contents are indexed and discoverable through major search engines and all non-embargoed work is publicly accessible. The repository is also interoperable with several aggregation services.

In many cases, you may lawfully make your work open access, even if it is not explicitly authorized in your publication agreement
